“A Whole School Stem Initiative”

Laing Middle School of Science and Technology’s Whole School STEM Initiative means an approach to education in which, the Engineering Design Process is used in all classes as a method for solving problems;  Technological Literacy designed by nationally recognized standards is a goal for all students; and hands on experience with practical applications of science, technology, mathematics, and engineering design isused to establish the real-world relevance and inter-relationships of allcurriculum subjects.

During the 2012-2013 school year, classes at Laing Middle Schoolof Science and Technology will maintain emphasis on content prescribed by South Carolina State Standards for core subjects. In addition, lesson plans for all classes will begin to:

  • Include problem-solving with the Engineering Design Process and build Engineering Design process skills;
  • Address standards for Technological Literacy deigned by the International Technology and Engineering Educators Association; and
  • Engage students in cross-curricular activities that involve solving problems in a student centered, teacher-facilitated learning environment.

In addition, students will participate in grade-wide and school wide activities that range from whole school “STEM Blitz” events tomulti-week projects that emphasize applying STEM skills to important real world issues.
