The Laing Chess Club will have its first meeting on September 16. We will meet on Tuesdays after School until 4:40pm. If you are interested in joining, stop by Mr. Graves’ room 237 or in the front office to pick up a sign up form. The club is limited to the first 35 to turn in forms and payment. Online payment here.
Drama Kids Acting Academy - (updated 8/25/25)
Drama Kids Acting Academy is excited to return to Laing this Fall! Grades 6 - 8. Exclusive to middle school students, this intermediate drama class will meet weekly for one hour and include a wide range of higher-level activities. Students will express themselves & collaborate in a safe environment. Experienced teachers will help to promote self-expression, communication, & creative thinking. Expand on acting fundamentals: vocal techniques, dramatic movement, & improvisation while delving deeper into more complex acting techniques like script analysis, character development, & physicality. Beginners and experienced actors are welcome! Join us beginning September 9 to December.
Grades: 6-8
Cost: $85 per month
Day: Meets Mondays except when school is closed.

Any students that are interested in serving as an FCA Student Leader this school year, please join us for an interest meeting on Wednesday, August 27 from 7:30-8:00 am in the Laing Gymnasium. To be considered, all students (including previous FCA student leaders) must complete an application, which can be submitted online using the following link:
Hard copies of the application will be available at the interest meeting as well. All applications must be received by Tuesday, September 2, 2025. Please also save the date for our first FCA huddle, which will be Wednesday, September 17, from 7:30-8:00 am in the Cafeteria.
Geology Club - Sponsors are Mrs. Scott and Mrs. Niemi (updated 8/26/25)
Geology club is an all-inclusive, exciting, educational group that focuses on bringing students together over a common love of all things Geology. Activities include participating in the Future Rock Hounds of America Badge Program, sorting and classifying rocks, crystals, and minerals, growing crystals, breaking geodes, and field trips twice a year. Contact Mrs. Scott at gina_scott@charleston.k12.sc.us or Mrs. Niemi at heather_niemi@charleston.k12.sc.us for more information. Dues for the year are $25 and include a t-shirt and cover the cost of incidentals. You may make a payment through RevTrack on the school’s website. Field trips will be an additional cost and are voluntary. Students are responsible for making up any missing work while on field trips.

Applications for any 7th and 8th grade student interested in joining National Junior Honor Society are now open. National Junior Honor Society Application. Applications are due Friday, September 5th.
NJHS is an organization that recognizes not only academic achievement but also qualities essential to being an upstanding citizen. It focuses on five pillars, scholarship, service, leadership, character, and citizenship. The requirements for joining NJHS is a GPA of 92 or above in the four core classes the previous semester and no office referrals. 7th & 8th graders can apply in fall while 6th graders can apply in January. Inductions into NJHS occur in late Spring.

Laing VEX Robotics Team applications for this year are now being accepted. It is due Friday, Sept. 26, 2025 to Mrs. Lambrakos room 183.
